Two Takes on the Truth
As I was reviewing the final draft of the seventh novel in the Enid Blackwell Mystery Series, it struck me how often the theme of “truth” has emerged throughout the series. It manifests in two distinct ways.
First, there is Enid’s relentless pursuit of truth in her journalistic reporting. The newspaper she worked for in Madden sums up its mission statement with the motto “Truth First.” And if you’ve read the series, you know she has often put herself and others in peril in her quest for the truth. Naturally, in murder mysteries, someone is always at risk of losing their life. While my novels are purely fictional, they mirror reality: the truth, while noble, can destroy careers, marriages, and other relationships. Or get you killed. Who knew truth could be so dangerous?
"The truth can liberate you—or destroy you”
The second manifestation of “truth” in the series arises when you, the reader, question “could this be true?” Examples include the deer spirit animal that appears to Enid, Karla the empath who helps find a missing woman, and the boy who communicates with his deceased grandmother. Now, in this seventh volume, you will meet a seer—someone who can see the future.
In each of these instances, I do not try to convince you to believe. Instead, I offer you the option to explain it away logically if it doesn’t align with your beliefs, or to accept that there are mysteries in our world we cannot explain. Just because we can’t explain them doesn’t make them any less real.
But again, I leave that to you to decide.
Update on New Release
Intrigued by this image? It’ll make sense when you read the next book in the Enid Blackwell Mystery Series. The goal is to release it in September, just in time for the fall festivals. The manuscript is currently with my editor. I’m excited and can’t wait to share it with you. Thanks to all of you who have nudged and urged me to get the next book out. Your gentle prods kept me going on days when I really didn’t want to write. THANK YOU!
Summer Hiatus
Due to the dangerously high heat index on July 4, we had to withdraw from the Gilbert Peach Festival. I was heartbroken, but extreme heat is nothing to play around with. I’ve nearly passed out from heat at a summer festival, and I don’t want to experience that again.
As for upcoming events, we’ll be at the Fall Midlands Arts & Crafts Festival on September 14-15 at the SC Farmers Market. More details on other fall events will be in the next newsletter.
Enjoy the rest of your July and be safe! We’ll talk again in August.
Your exploration of truth always keeps me on the edge of my seat!! Stay cool and safe in this deadly heat—can't wait to read your next Enid Blackwell book!
Super excited for your next book!!! Missed you at the Peach 🍑 Festival. It was definitely warm! Do you have an Event, for the September date, on your Facebook?
